• How to Take Care of Your Feet When Traveling

Summer travel season is in full swing, and you and your feet are ready to hit the road. But before you embark on your next journey, follow these tips to make sure your feet stay safe and healthy.

Wear the right shoes (and socks) for the airport

Long lines, long walks through the terminal or the potential for a last-minute dash to catch a flight are all possibilities when traveling. Wear comfortable shoes that provide proper support while heading to your destination. While flip-flops and sandals are easier to slip off for security checks, they also expose your feet to sharp objects and dirty airport surfaces, as well as increasing your risk of tripping and spraining an ankle. Be sure to wear socks with your comfy shoes, so that your bare feet aren’t exposed to bacteria and viruses that can lead to athlete’s foot or plantar warts.

Don’t break in new shoes while traveling

You may want to show off that new pair of kicks on vacation, but new shoes can often be stiff and uncomfortable. If you end up doing lots of walking on your trip, you may end up suffering in those cute new shoes.

Stretch regularly during long trips

If you have a flight or drive that’s over 2 hours long, be sure to stretch your legs, feet, and ankles or get up and walk around at least once every hour. This will help prevent swelling and stiffness in feet and ankles. If you have a history of foot and ankle swelling, you may want to consider wearing compression socks or stockings during your journey.

Pack a foot first-aid kit

Bring along a basic foot care kit that includes: saline solution – for cleaning minor foot scrapes or blisters; adhesive bandages or gauze; and some antifungal cream or powder – for preventing or treating athlete’s foot. If you suffer a serious foot injury, be sure to seek medical attention immediately and follow-up with an appointment with your regular foot doctor once you return from vacation.

Alternate shoes each day

Wearing the same shoes on your vacation can quickly lead to smelly feet. Moisture and bacteria can build up inside shoes if you don’t allow them time to air out between wearings. Pack along a pair of flip-flops or shower shoes to use in moist common areas like pools and locker rooms where it can be easy to pick up athlete’s foot or toenail fungus.

Watch your diet (gout)

Vacation often means eating foods that you normally wouldn’t or shouldn’t. Try to limit your intake of salty foods and alcohol which can lead to dehydration that make your feet and ankles swell. If you have gout, watching your diet is especially important if you want to prevent a painful flare-up that could ruin an otherwise pleasant trip. Avoid foods that are high in purines, like red meat, shellfish, fatty sauces, and excess alcohol.
