• Rock Christmas for Those in Need: The J.W. Rock Gift Delivery

An old saying among motorcyclists is, “Four wheels move the body. Two wheels move the soul.” And during the Christmas holidays, motorcyclists of Central Texas unite through the J.W. Rock Foundation to move the souls of countless needy families with donations of gift certificates, food baskets and toys.

Who was J.W. Rock?

J.W. Rock was president of the Texas Bandidos Motorcycle Club and a dedicated biker who loved more than anything to kick up the jiffy and spark the pavement on his deluxe chopper. Biking was his life, and fellow bikers were like family. J.W. especially loved the Christmas season, but he recognized that children in transitional environments were often overlooked during the hustle and rush of the holiday. So he decided to do something about that. In 2000, J.W. and a close-knit group of fellow bikers pooled their resources together to benefit families in need.

He had set a precedent, and for the next four years he and his friends continued to raise money and purchase gifts for the neediest of families. After J.W. died in 2004, it seemed the tradition would end. But that’s when his family received a letter in the mail from a child who had received a present from J.W. the previous year. The young writer spoke of how meaningful J.W.’s efforts had been, and the family knew right away that the tradition of helping families in need must continue.

Helping the souls of others in need

Thus, the J.W. Rock Foundation was created. Its goal is to provide those in need with food and Christmas gifts. Through cash donations, funds are raised year long. By December, families are selected based on recommendations from St. Vincent de Paul.

No fees or costs are associated with the selection process of families, and the charity has zero overhead costs. 100% of all funds collected are forwarded on to the needy. Every year the number of families serviced continues to grow. In 2012, enough money was raised to provide 32 families with food and gifts.

On the last Sunday before Christmas, deliveries are made in a grandiose fashion that nearly rivals Santa and his sleigh. A dozen or so roaring motorcyclists ride up the street and park their bikes. Excited children watch from the windows, experiencing thrills and excitement as bikers carry armfuls of gifts and food baskets to their door.
